Rhode Island School Involvement

Rhode Island School Activities R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 28-48-1, 28-48-12.

Covered Employers: Employers with 50 or more employees.

Employee Eligibility: Full-time employees who have been employed by the covered employer for 12 consecutive months and who work an average of thirty (30) or more hours per week.

Entitlement: An eligible employee is entitled to 10 hours of leave during any 12 month period to attend school conferences or other school-related activities for a child of whom the employee is the parent, foster parent, or guardian.

Employee Notice: The employee must provide twenty-four (24) hours prior notice of the leave and make a reasonable effort to schedule the leave so as not to unduly disrupt the operations of the employer.

Employer Notice: The employer must post in a conspicuous place a notice, approved by the agency, setting forth excerpts from, or summaries of, the relevant provisions of the Rhode Island Parental and Family Medical Leave Act.

Obligation to Provide Certifications or Documents Supporting Need for Leave: Not specified

Paid?: This leave is not required to be paid but an employee may substitute any accrued paid leave time.

Reinstatement: Every employee who exercises his or her right to parental leave or family leave under this chapter shall, upon the expiration of that leave, be entitled to be restored by the employer to the position held by the employee when the leave commenced, or to a position with equivalent seniority, status, employment benefits, pay, and other terms and conditions of employment, including fringe benefits and service credits that the employee had been entitled to at the commencement of leave.

Other Important Definitions/Requirements: The taking of leave pursuant to this chapter shall not result in the loss of any benefit accrued before the date on which the leave commenced.
